CHENNAI: The sport of squash has received a shot in the arm with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shortlisting it along with a few other disciplines for possible inclusion in the Olympic Games. A decision on the shortlisting was taken at the IOC Executive Board Meeting in Beijing recently to go into revision process of Olympic disciplines. Squash has been included along with rugby, golf, karate and roller sports in the fresh list for review. A firm decision on these sports will, however, be taken after the Beijing Games, an intimation from N. Ramachandran, President, Asian Squash Federation and Secretary-General, Squash Rackets Federation of India, said. Ramachandran said: “This is great news for squash. Till now the sport had been finding it difficult to get noticed at the IOC-level. Now that it has come into its purview surely all major tournaments will now come under its assessment. Surely competitive levels in every major championship at the international-level will pick up.” He said the IOC decision would also serve as an impetus to inspire Indian players to look for higher level of excellence in international competitions.
