BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi has announced to host a five-day historical drama festival at the Rabindra Mandap in the city commencing on Friday. “It would be the first event of its kind for the State. The thrust is on highlighting the pioneering contribution of some of the great sons of the soil for the freedom struggle. The plays would revolve round the lives and times of Jayee Rajguru, Buxi Jagabandhu, Chakara Bisoi, Surendra Sai and Krutibas Patsani,” informed Akademi secretary M.N. Satpathy. “Spanning over 55 years prior to the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, these period plays would portray the lives of freedom fighters and their battle against the mighty British. The thrust would be on highlighting these historical movements of Orissa as the first freedom struggle of the Indian sub-continent,” he elaborated. Established theatre organisations of the State like the city-based Satabdira Kalakar and Sampark of Rourkela have been roped in to produce the plays, the secretary said and mentioned Law and Industries Minister B.B. Harichandan, a known dramatist himself, has scripted the play on Krutibas Patsani.
