Seeking blessings: MLA Perni Venkataramaiah touches the feet of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting in Machilipatnam on Wendesday. — MACHILIPATNAM: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has assured farmers of Krishna district, who suffered losses during the recent rains that the Government would come to their rescue by paying them compensation. At the public meeting he addressed at Noble College ground after laying a foundation stone for the deep water port, Dr. Reddy acknowledged that the farmers of chilli, black gram and mango crops suffered losses, and the Government would not show any laxity in addressing their problems. The Chief Minister said while TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu was promising to do a lot for Krishna district if voted to power, he had done nothing for the district when he was in power for nine long years. The contrast between what the Chandrababu Naidu Government had done and what his Government had done during the last four years was clearly evident, he claimed. Dr. Reddy was visibly embarrassed when local MLA Perni Venkataramaiah (Nani) suddenly touched his feet after describing him as “a god who has given so many boons to Krishna district and more particularly Machilipatnam without even asking for them.” Mr. Venkataramaiah said he would not care for the Opposition parties’ criticism that he was “prostrating before the Chief Minister”, as there was nothing wrong in doing it “in front of the god.” The Chief Minister spent barely two hours in the town but participated in a string of programmes as planned. He arrived at the police parade ground by a helicopter at 3.20 p.m. as scheduled and rushed through all the programmes, beginning with the laying of foundation stone for the widening of the road from Koneru Centre to railway station into a four-lane road. The Roads & Buildings Department would execute this project at a cost of Rs.3.4 crores. The bus carrying the Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs and others later reached Three Pillar Centre, where he laid a foundation stone for municipal drainage works to be taken up by the Machilipatnam Municipality at a cost of Rs.84 crores. At the same venue, Dr. Reddy also inaugurated the work of laying a bye-pass road to NH-214 to connect to Challapalli. At the Zilla Parishad Centre he inaugurated a swimming pool constructed by the Krishna District Sports Authority at a cost of Rs.65 lakhs. From there, he reached Chinakaragraharam to lay the stone for the deep water port. MP Badiga Ramakrishna, Ministers Mandali Buddha Prasad, Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao and Mopidevi Venkata Ramana, Zilla Parishad Chairman K. Nageswara Rao, MLAs and district Collector Shailaja Ramaiyer participated in the programmes.
