‘Industries should be started on barren land’ ‘50 per cent of jobs in these industries should be given to local people’ Yellur (Udupi District): The president of the Nandikur Janajagriti Samiti, Balakrishna Shetty, has said that the setting up of the 1,015 MW coal-based thermal power project by Udupi Power Corporation Ltd. at Yellur would have negative effects on the environment. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Shetty said that seven streams that joined the Adve rivulet, which in turn joined the Mulki river, would be affected by the ash-pond, which the company wants to construct at Yellur. Once the ash-pond was constructed, it would block the streams. Blocking the streams was a clear violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms. The Mainda and Parady ponds at Yellur were perennial sources of water. Mr. Shetty said that the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) had violated norms in acquiring land from farmers. In another press meet held in Udupi on Tuesday, the president of the Jaya Sri Krishna Parisara Premi Samiti, Vishwanath Mada, said that his organisation would oppose any thermal project or Special Economic Zones in coastal Karnataka which would affect the environment. He said that there should no forcible acquisition of land. Industries should be started on barren or dry land. Fifty per cent of jobs in any industry being set up in the region should be provided to local people, Mr. Mada added.
