TIRUPUR: Over 300 cadres of the Communist Party

of India (CPI) and CPI (Marxist) on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the Tirupur Corporation condemning the Centre for not bringing down the prices of essential commodities.

Tirupur taluk secretary of CPI M. Ravi and Tirupur town (south) secretary of the CPI(M) M. Rajagopal led the agitation. As part of its Statewide joint agitation programme, the protesters raised slogans against the Centre for not taking adequate steps to procure the foodgrains and permitting futures trading, which allegedly fuels prices by speculation.

The cadres of the Left parties wanted the Centre to implement new irrigation schemes and higher financial allocation for agriculture sector. While seeking wide range of changes in the public distribution system, the protesters demanded the Government to take firm action to curb hoarding of essential commodities.

On Tuesday, CPI national council member S.S. Thiyagarajan and CPI (M) central committee member G. Ramakrishnan addressed a public meeting condemning the United Progressive Alliance Government for its failure in the controlling prices.
