An array of handicrafts from across the country

Take your pick: Products from Rajasthan on display at the handloom and handicrafts exhibition on Beach Road.in Puducherry. —

PUDUCHERRY: Make your pick from a range of products from across the country starting with Hyderabad pearls, Banaras silk, Jaipur cotton, Gujarat handloom, Rajasthan decoratives or even Uttar Pradesh linen works at a handloom and handicraft exhibition.

The three-month exhibition, which was inaugurated on April 7, was organised by the Vasantham Sathya Puratchi Women Self-Help Group (SHG), Thengaithittu. The sale will go on till July 10.

Products

Twenty-two members of the SHG have collected products from various places including Rajasthan, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

For those looking for decoratives, an array of colourful products from Rajasthan and Karnataka which includes puppets and wall hangers and jute products from Puducherry are on sale at the exhibition.

Indeed, young girls and women can make their choices from a variety of jewellery items from Hyderabad pearls, five metal foil, anklets, bangles and chains, earrings made of semi-precious stones and jute necklace sets.

A pearl earring set from Hyderabad costs Rs. 30, while a pearl necklace set is priced at Rs. 4,000.

Earrings made of semi-precious stones cost Rs. 30 and chains are priced at Rs. 60.

A range of bags made of jute, cotton and printed leather find place in the sale.

Not to forget the dress materials and kurtas with batik, hand print, French knot-works and silk works are available at the exhibition.

“Keeping the safety of children in mind, toys made of vegetable colours from Chennapattinam, Karnataka are on sale here. We also have lucky stones, rudrakshas and conches from Madurai displayed here,” C. Yogeswaran from Madurai who has put up a stall at the exhibition said.

Colourful and exquisitely designed cushion sets, bed sheets and diwan sets, wall hangers made of silk from Banaras could just be a little heavy on your purses.

A full set including bed sheets, four cushion covers and two pillow covers made of silk costs Rs. 2,000. Silk saris and churidhars are also available. Handloom sarees with the natural tie and dye works from Madurai are priced at Rs. 240 to Rs. 1,200.

The exhibition has a variety of kurtas and ghagra choli sets from Gujarat with sequence, mirror and bead works.

“For those who want to have their portraits sketched in five minutes, we have put up a stall here.

“A portrait costs Rs. 50. We also have palm leaf painting from Orissa,” M. Althaf, who is in-charge of the exhibition, added further.
