Court allows AMU to hold admission tests in four cities sans quota

Tests will be held in Bhopal, Kozhikode, Kolkata and Pune

University had filed an application seeking clarification on new centres

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has allowed Aligarh Muslim University to hold admission tests for its medical, engineering and other professional courses at four new centres in the country with a condition that it will not implement 50 per cent reservation for Muslim students. The apex court said AMU can go ahead with its decision to open Admission Entrance Test Centres in Bhopal, Kozhikode, Kolkata and Pune as part of its efforts to attract meritorious students from all parts of country.

“The University is permitted to open Admission Entrance Test Centres provided that the appellant (AMU) will not implement 50 per cent quota of reservation for admission at these centres as ordered by this court on April 24, 2006,” a Bench headed by Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan said in its order on Tuesday. The AMU had given an undertaking to the apex court that it would not implement the decision on 50 per cent quota for Muslim students till the pendency of its appeal against the Allahabad High Court judgment quashing the minority status of the university. The university had filed an application seeking a clarification whether opening of new admission centres would violate the April 24, 2006, status quo order of the apex court. While restraining AMU from implementing the 50 per cent quota for Muslim students, the Court had directed it to a maintain the status quo regarding all other matters. The High Court on January 5, 2006, had struck down the provision of the AMU Amendment Act, 1981, by which the status of the minority institution was accorded to AMU. - PTI
