Jailed rights activist gets global award

Aarti Dhar

NEW DELHI: Civil rights activist Binayak Sen, who is in jail for the past one year for his alleged links with naxalites, has become the first south Asian to win the prestigious Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights. The Global Health Council is the world’s largest membership alliance of public health organisations and professionals working to improve health and save the lives of the poor. It serves and represents public health organisations in more than 140 countries.

The council, along with other international health organisations, has requested India to find means to allow Dr. Sen — a paediatrician — to receive the award in person in Washington on May 28 at the 35th annual international conference on global health.
