Develops graded primary reading material in Tamil

The materials will aid students in learning new words and forming sentences

The objective is to make children read books on their own before completing Standard III

YERCAUD: The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has developed graded primary reading materials in Tamil language for children in Standard I and II to develop their reading habit and vocabulary.

The materials were developed at a workshop conducted by the SSA here from April 21 to 23.

The materials would help the students in learning new words and forming sentences.

About 50 such reading materials have been developed, which the children will find more interesting to read, SSA officials said.

The SSA would conduct seminars and programmes about the materials in various parts of the State and standardise them, before introducing them in all the schools.

All the primary schools in the State were already given 150 books each from the National Book Trust.

The children, who use the newly-developed graded reading materials, would be able to read these books without facing any difficulties.

The objective of the initiative is to make the children read the books on their own before completing Standard III, officials here said.

Aruna Ratnam from UNICEF and Madhavan from Tamil Nadu Science Forum, Vellore, were the resource persons.

Salem SSA Chief Educational Officer S. Umarani inaugurated the workshop.

Teachers from as many as 10 districts participated in the workshop.
