NAMAKKAL: Namakkal Municipality Chairman and Councillors cutting across party affiliations sat on a dharna in front of the local body’s office here on Thursday protesting against the Municipal Commissioner for not replying to their queries properly during the council meeting.
Councillors, speaking in the meeting, criticised the municipal administration for the inordinate delay in completing the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) project.
All the roads in the town remained badly damaged and the trenches dug up for laying sewer pipelines had not been closed properly.
The municipal officials were not monitoring the execution of the project.
No concrete action had been taken up to expedite the implementation of the project, councillors alleged. They also complained that the municipal administration had not started the implementation of many development works in several parts of the town.
Municipal Chairman R. Selvaraj also pointed that the delay in completing the UGD related works.
When councillors demanded an explanation from Commissioner Poonkodi Arumaikan, it led to an argument between them.
The development works were being carried out properly and without any delays, the Commissioner said and walked out of the council hall in a huff.
Protesting, the Chairman and councillors sat on a dharna and raised slogans against the municipal administration.
