PUDUCHERRY: Announcing in the Assembly on Thursday that the government was keen on alleviating the problems of the mill workers in the Union Territory, Chief Minister N.Rangasamy said the interim relief for the unskilled workers of the Anglo-French Textile Mills would be increased to Rs.1,000 on a par with that of the skilled workers. He also announced that the government would provide a similar interim relief for the workers of Jayaprakash Narain Cooperative Spinning Mills in Karaikal, who had been demanding pay parity with the Puducherry Cooperative Spinning Mills. The government would form a two-member committee to go into the issues of the mills, he said, appealing to the workers to give up their agitation. Referring to the steps taken by the government including last year’s allocation of Rs.22 crore to disburse wages for the workers of the AFT Mills, the Chief Minister said the finances of none of the mills were sound. The members also should think of the financial commitment of the government if the Central D.A. was implemented for the workers, he added. Steps would be taken to improve the condition of the mills on the basis of the two-member committee announced by him on Wednesday, he said. Speaker R. Radhakrishnan said the workers of the AFT Mills should be asked to reconsider their decision to go ahead with the bandh called by them, as the government evinced interest in alleviating their problems. Medical collegeDuring the question hour, Mr. Rangasamy said he would make a detailed statement in the House on the issues relating to the Government Medical College project. Replying to a query by J. Narayanasamy (Independent), he said he would do so in response to the queries raised by the members.
