NEW DELHI: Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) along with all stakeholders carried out a “full-scale mock aircraft crash exercise” at India Gandhi International Airport here on Wednesday.

The exercise was carried out to observe the coordination of activities at the crash site and communications among various participating organisations, agencies, services and units and see the preparedness and training of all the staff at the airport. It was a drill for handling procedures for aircraft crash within the airport fire service turn-out area, said a DIAL official.

“The exercise also helped practise the information management procedures, operating procedures of the command centre, crisis management centre, emergency response and interaction centre, emergency coordination centre, survivors’ reception centre, friends and relatives’ reception centre and reunion area,” he added. The exercise announcement was made by Air Traffic Control to check the efficiency and response time of various departments, agencies and concessionaires at the airport, including Central Industrial Security Force, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, medical units, ambulance, hospitals, city fire service and airlines.

The mock exercise was initiated at 1-10 p.m. as per the airport emergency plan. A real Boeing 737-800 aircraft was used for the drill. The aircraft was carrying some oxidising chemicals to test the efficacy of handling of dangerous goods on board.
