Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Congress (M) leader K.M. Mani on Thursday opposed the State government’s decision to introduce single window system for higher secondary admissions. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Mani said that the move was unscientific and dangerous and infringed on the rights of parents and students to choose courses and institutions. The existing system was time-tested, transparent and least complicated. Besides, LKG to Plus Two was part of the school system and introducing a system applicable to admissions in professional courses was impractical. He alleged that the introduction of the new system was politically motivated. Its intention was dubious as it would lead to divesting school managements of their role in admissions and political interference in the admission process, he said. Parents usually preferred to send their children to institutions close to their residence. The new system would deny the applicants of this opportunity . Admissions to a school away from home would only lead to higher expenses in terms of travel, hostel fee etc, he said. Higher costThe single window system in all districts would push up the cost of admission. The State had the facility to provide higher education facilities to almost all students passing their SSLC examinations and the single window system would only lead to unavoidable expenditure. The government, instead of introducing a centralised system, should create conditions for students belonging to a particular locality to study in the same locality. Moreover, the school managements would have no role under the new system. Mr. Mani also feared that such an admission procedure would affect discipline as the entrants would have no stake in the school.
