PALAKKAD: The Agriculture Department here will purchase a harvesting machine for use in the next paddy harvesting season of August-September. FundsAgriculture Department officials said here on Thursday that the State government had sanctioned Rs.27 lakh for purchasing the machine. The government was planning to provide funds to grama panchayats to purchase combine harvesters. An amount of Rs.39 lakh from the Backward Area Grants Fund and Paddy Development Agency would be utilised to purchase the harvesters. The officials said that the shortage of machines to harvest paddy in large tracts of paddy field in the district would be solved to some extent by making available the machine under the district panchayat and the Agriculture Department. The district panchayat purchased two machines under the Plan Campaign programme. One machine would be allotted to the Kuthanur agriculture farm and the other to the Ambattupalayam Pakasekhara Samithi, the officials said.
