Court stays construction of resort

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed the State Government and its agencies to ensure that no further activities, whether cutting of trees or digging of land or putting up any structure on survey number 128 was carried out in Harishina Guppe village in Chikamagalur district. A Division Bench comprising Justice D.V. Shylendra Kumar and Justice Ravi B. Naik passed the order on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition by Girish and other residents of Chikamagalur district. The petitioners had challenged the permission given by the authorities for the construction of a resort on 34 acres of Gomal land in the village. The petitioners claimed that the permission by the authorities was illegal and that it would be against public interest. The Bench accepted the arguments of the petitioners and admitted the petition. It ordered issue of emergent notices to the State and adjourned hearing on the petition.
