Petition filed under RTI by social activist

Kochi: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has closed 44 suo motu cases initiated by it on the basis of newspaper reports.

In reply to a petition filed under the Right to Information Act, the public information officer of the commission said that 125 cases were suo motu initiated between August 16, 2006 to October 31, 2007. The commission made recommendations to the State government in 17 cases.

As many as 44 cases were closed after inquiry.

The remaining 64 cases were pending before the commission.

The petition, under the Act, was filed by Jomon Puthenpurackal, social activist.

The information officer said the commission had been informed of the actions being taken by the government in 10 cases.

The commission provided the information following the intervention of Chief Information Commissioner Palat Mohandas. The social activist had filed an appeal against an order of the public information officer and registrar of the commission refusing to part with some of the information.

The commissioner also directed the commission to provide all the information that was sought by the petitioner.

The commissioner said the information on the commission’s recommendations and their acceptance or otherwise would be reflected in its annual report to be placed before the Assembly.
