KOCHI: A web-enabled inventory management system for the Department of Medical and Health Services, introduced by the Lakshadweep Administration, has made a positive impact on the health-care system in the islands. The online system, called Ever Alert, facilitates the procurement and monitoring of availability of medicines in all hospitals, community health centres and primary health centres across the islands. As part of the programme, the hospitals and health centres have been provided with dedicated Internet connection through the NICNET. The system maintains the inventory of allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines of the hospitals of various islands. Ever Alert facilitates centralised stock management of medicines, consumption analysis and cargo management of medicines among the central store and field office stores. The system also keeps track of the expiry dates of the medicines. Making available all essential and emergency medicines in all islands had been one of the biggest challenges for the Medical Department. The problem could be tackled with the introduction of the web-based system, according to a top official of the Administration. As the name implies, the system alerts the authorities whenever there is a possibility of shortage of medicines at any of the locations in the network. The project was initiated by Administrator B.V. Selvaraj with a view to ensuring that life-saving medicines are available in all hospitals and primary health centres. Online generation of supply order, location-wise stock position of medicines and e-mail alert to the controlling office have immensely helped the medicare system, according to officials. The Lakshadweep Administration has also taken steps to provide telemedicine facility with the help of the Indian Space Research Organisation.
