Engineer promises to pay back dues

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A junior engineer from Bellary district on Thursday informed the Karnataka High Court that he is willing to pay Rs. 15.91 lakh he owes to the Government provided he is permitted to take voluntary retirement so that he can contest the coming Assembly elections as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.

The engineer, L. Madhu Naik, said he had been offered a ticket by the BJP to contest the elections from Huvinahadagahalli in Bellary district. He said he had also been given the “B” form by the party.

Mr. Naik said he was appointed as junior engineer from 1989 and that he was under the administrative control of the zilla panchayat engineering sub-division at Huvanahadagalli and Chief Engineer, Panchayati Raj. He claimed that he had put in 19 years of blemishless service in the department.

He said he had sought VRS after he decided to contest the elections.

The zilla panchayat permitted him to retire from service with effect from April 11, 2008.

He said even as he was readying himself to file his nomination papers, he was told that the State had issued an order on April 16 cancelling his VRS, saying that he owed the Government Rs. 15.91 lakh as dues.

Mr. Naik moved the High Court urging it to cancel the April 16 order.

Justice L. Narayanaswamy said he would stay the April 16 order provided Mr. Naik deposited the dues. Mr. Naik said he would deposit the amount on Friday.
