Bangalore: Upalokayukta G. Patri Basavanagoud has called upon plantation owners to manage their plantations and labour with a humanitarian perspective. He was speaking at the convocation of the Indian Institute of Plantation Management here on Thursday.
Mr. Basavanagoud said that during his experience as a judge, he found that it was easy to solve the conflicts between the management and labour as long as the management looked at the problems in a humanitarian manner. “Organised labour is rarely involved in such cases,” he said.
M.H. Ashraff, managing director, Tata Coffee Ltd., was the chief guest on the occasion.
He said that earlier, plantation management was production-centric. The scenario has changed now.
“Today, the plantation manager has to be more pro-active to effectively manage the emerging challenges. Sustainability has become the new mantra, ” Mr. Ashraff added.
