India’s Beijing hopes dashed

Kazan: The Indian women’s hockey team’s slim chances of making it to the Beijing Olympics were buried when it was beaten 4-0 by tournament favourite, the United States, here on Thursday.

Its third successive defeat in the Olympic qualifiers ensured that M.K. Kaushik’s charges would miss out on the Olympics in the Chinese capital in August.

India is left with three points from four matches and even if it beats France in the final league fixture on Saturday, it cannot make it to the final with only the tournament winner ensured of a passage to Beijing.

The U.S., which has won all its matches, sits pretty with 12 points and is almost ensured of a place in the final. — PTI
