Relatives meet Sarabjit

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: The family of Sarabjit Singh on Thursday met the death row prisoner whose execution Pakistani authorities have fixed for May 1.

The meeting took place at the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore. In the capital, the government indicated that there was still a chance that Sarabjit’s life may be spared.

“It saddened us but at the same time, it was a moment of joy for all of us,” said Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur, as she and the rest of the family emerged from the Kot Lakhpat jail premises after the meeting that lasted more than three hours.

“We never thought we would be able to see him after 18 years and that too in such a situation,” said Mrs. Dalbir Kaur.

Along with her were her husband, Sarabjit’s wife Sukhpreet and his daughters Swapandeep and Poonam. They arrived in Lahore on Wednesday across the Wagah border, to meet him.

The family also want to meet all the top Pakistan leaders to plead Sarabjit’s case.

Their meeting with Sarabjit lasted from 4.30 pm until 7 pm. Normally only one hour is allotted for visitors.
