PSUs told to create green belts

Bhubaneswar: Worried over unusual heat in Orissa’s industrailly developed Angul-Talcher belt, the State Government on Thursday asked public sector majors like NALCO, NTPC and MCL to participate in creation of green belt in the area.

The region was experiencing temperature above 44 degree Celsius for some days particularly in mining zones.

The Government also decided to draw a long-term action plan for greening Angul-Talcher area which housed several thermal power plants, Nalco’s smelter unit and open cast mining by the Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL). NTPC alone generated 4450 MW of power in the region.

A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Ajit Tripathy and attended by representatives of different public sectors units, issued a warning to MCL holding it partly responsible for adding to the heat wave condition in the region.

“The Orissa Government today cautioned MCL to face penalty proceeding as it had violated laws relating to environmental clearance for undertaking coal mining in the region”, Special Secretary, Forest and Environment, P N Padhi said. According to environmental commitments made by MCL, he said, the public sector should create adequate green cover in peripheral area of its open cast coal mines. Though the government had several times requested the company, it did not take up any measures, Padhi pointed out.

Tripahty directed MCL not to keep coal consignment on open for long and undertake water sprinkling on the roads used for transportation of coal. - PTI
