Southern Railway GM inspects MRTS works
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Chopra on Thursday inspected Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) works between Velachery and St.Thomas Mount.
Mr. Chopra told The Hindu that the progress of the work was satisfactory. Reputed contractors had been entrusted the work and they were adopting latest technologies used by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
He said that two stations would come up between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount and the entire 5-km stretch would be on an elevated track on the middle of the road. Except a small portion near the St.Thomas Mount where pucca buildings had come up, the rest of the work had been targeted to be completed in one-and-a-half years. If the State government handed over the small stretch to the railways, work would begin in that portion too, he added.
The total project cost was about Rs.495.73 crore, which was being shared by the State government and the railways on 2:1 ratio.
