BERHAMPUR: At least four children died of measles at Sahaspur village under Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district during the past one week. Measles has taken epidemic turn at the village. The four children who had fallen victim to measles were Kanha Behera, 4, Tingira Behera, 5, Rama Patra, 2, and Barsha behera, 3. Till Thursday evening, some 30 children of the village were affected by measles. Cases of measles have also reported from Nuajalapada, a nearby village. Most of the measles patients are being treated at the Adapada Primary Health Centre (PHC). Additional District Medical Officer Hrushikesha Mohapatra and the Digaphandi tehsildar rushed to the affected areas to take stock of the situation. It was decided to have public awareness drive in the area. They were advised to get medical aid as early as possible when they suspected their children were affected by measles. It may be noted that around four months ago, measles claimed lives of four children in the Siddheswar panchayat of Digapahandi block of the district. Areas of Sanakhemundi block and its adjoining Digaphandi block have also been affected by gastro-enteritis in recent weeks. Gastroenteritis claimed four lives at Chadheyagarad village under Siddheswar panchayat of Digapahandi block last week.
