National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research director hurt in attack

CUTTACK: Tension mounted at the National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (NIRTAR) at Olatpur under Gobindpur police station of the district on Thursday when agitated students of the institute attacked its director injuring him grievously.

In retaliation, some locals and non-students made a counter attack on the students as a result at least five inmates of the hostel sustained injuries.

Superintendent of Police A N Sinha, who immediately rushed to the site ordered deployment of five platoons of armed police in the area. “Tension is still prevailing on the campus till evening as both students and non-students are still at loggerheads,” said the local police. Two cases have been registered on the basis of complaints filed by the institute director and three students have been taken into police custody, police added.

Gheraoed

The trouble began early in the morning when a few hostel students gheraoed the director, B.M. Pradhan, demanding immediate solution to various problems afflicting the hostel. The students alleged that the fans in the hostel were not functioning properly and the hostel was facing acute shortage of water. They said many students had fallen sick due to contaminated water.

Police said some students, in a fit of rage, suddenly attacked the Director when the latter reportedly showed indifference towards the problems of the hostel inmates. They also went on a rampage breaking furniture and other accessories of the office of the Director.

Seeing the Director being brutally attacked, some locals came to his rescue and launched a counter offensive against the agitated students.
