THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, in association with the State government, will provide free textbooks for children from Classes II to VIII from the coming academic year. Nearly 50 lakh children across the State will benefit from the scheme, according to B. Vijayakumar, director SSA. The project cost would be shared by the SSA and the State government in the ratio 65:35, he said. One of the primary objectives of SSA — a programme for improving elementary education under the Ministry of Human Resource Development — is to provide relevant elementary education for children in the 6 to 14 age group by 2010. This calls for a long-term financial partnership between the Central and the State governments. Education of girls, especially those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and minorities, is one of the principal concerns of SSA. The programme also lays thrust on improving curriculum, evolving more child-centred activities and on effective teaching-learning strategies.
