Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Vice Chancellor of Manipal University Rajasekharan Warrier said that palliative care offered comprehensive care and met the physical and psychosocial needs of patients and their families. The goal of palliative care was to relieve pain, clear symptoms and stress of serious ailments, and improve quality of life through prevention and early identification, assessment and treatment of pain and other problems. “Palliative care is typically provided by a multidisciplinary team that includes doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and physiotherapists”, he said. Pallium India, in collaboration with The Education in Palliative and End of Life Care (EPEC) India and Manipal University, would be conducting the workshop for educating primary care physicians, nurses and social workers in palliative care. Issues dealing with pain, symptom control, communication skills, psycho-social, paediatric palliative care and end of life care would be discussed. The EPEC India curriculum was based on the original curriculum formulated in the U.S. and followed across the world, he added. TrainingThe workshop will conclude on April 27. Pro Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University S.S. Pabla was present on the occasion.
