Four arrested for bid to smuggle rice

Caught: A van used to smuggle rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System was seized by officials in Tirupur on Thursday.
TIRUPUR: Four persons including a salesman and a packer of a fair price shop at Appachi Nagar here were arrested on Thursday by the Civil Supplies CID while attempting to smuggle 1,450 kg of rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System in Tirupur.
Mayor K. Selvaraj who went to Appachi Nagar in the morning for his usual ward visit alerted the civil supplies officials on seeing the van in which the rice bags were being loaded in front of the fair price shop.
The officials after verifying the stock at the shop found that it was an attempt to smuggle the rice.
The van was seized and the driver arrested.
