Permanent houses for tsunami victims by June-end

NAGAPATTINAM: The State Government has asked the district administration to complete the construction of the remaining 2,500 permanent houses for tsunami victims before June-end.

The Government had decided to construct 19,700 houses at 79 locations. More than 50 non-governmental organizations were entrusted the construction of nearly 16,000 houses, and the Government planned to build the rest. In the past two years, the NGOs had built 15,000 houses and handed them over to the beneficiaries.

Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar said Rs.400 crore had so far been spent by the NGOs and the Government on construction, besides Rs.200 crore on provision of amenities and free land to the NGOs.
