17 factories ordered closed
Staff Reporter
ERODE: After a surprise raid on dyeing, printing and bleaching factories in and around the town on Thursday, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials have ordered closure of 17 factories.
District Environment Engineer A. Joseph Pandiaraj said eight engineers inspected 24 factories at Periyasemur and found 17 of them bypassing the treatment plant set up to discharge effluents into the Pichaikaranpallam Odai, which joins the Cauvery.
The reason for the action was to check pollution in the Cauvery where, despite the minimum flow, more water is drawn for drinking, Mr. Pandiaraj said.
The Board also ordered that power supply to these units be stopped.
The raid comes close on the heels on another the Board conducted on Tuesday last, when 12 bleaching and dyeing units were ordered closed.
