Mercury crosses 40 in Delhi

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Dichotomous Delhi that freezes over during winter is simmering on the verge of yet another blazing summer, with the mercury inching up to the uncomfortable 40s on the temperature scale.

Like it had a life of its own, the mercury these past seven days has maintained a steady upward course with the maximum temperature recorded being 33.5, 36.0, 38.0, 38.8, 39.6 and 40.2 degrees Celsius. Meteorological Department officials on Wednesday put this April 23 to be the hottest of the past five years, barring last year when the maximum temperature had touched 41 degrees.

And if summer is in the air, can water and power woes be far behind?

The Delhi Jal Board has said the water level at two of its treatment plants—Chandrawal and Wazirabad—has fallen consequent to the depletion in the water levels of the Yamuna.

The water shortage has also resulted in “dry” days for VIP areas of Central Delhi with several localities facing an acute shortage.
