NEW DELHI: Criticising statements by U.S. officials concerning Iran-India relations, the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday asked the government to make it clear to the U.S. that India was not its “client State” and demanded speedy clearance to the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project. Senior CPI leader and Lok Sabha member C.K. Chandrappan told journalists: “India is not a client State of the U.S. and this should be made clear to Washington by the UPA government.” Asserting that the gas pipeline should not be delayed any further, CPI national secretary and Rajya Sabha member D. Raja said the government should “take the dialogue to a higher level and clinch the agreement” during the upcoming visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadnejad. The CPI(M) on Wednesday demanded that the U.S. envoy be summoned by the government to express “disapproval” of the “gross interference” by Washington in its relations with other countries.
