Delhi court summons: Alleged don Abu Salem. Photo: NEW DELHI: A court here has once again issued a production warrant against alleged underworld don Abu Salem directing Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail authorities to produce him before it on May 29. Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur issued the warrant when the jail authorities failed to produce Salem here in connection with an extortion case. On May 29 the court will also hear the plea of the Delhi Government seeking revocation of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Salem on the ground that invoking the Act against Salem violated the provisions of the extradition treaty with Portugal on the basis of which he was deported to India in 2005. Salem was allegedly involved in the 1993 serial blasts case, besides several other criminal cases. Earlier, hearing in the matter had been deferred following allegations by Salem’s counsel that the Delhi Police were not bringing Salem here as they wanted to delay the proceedings. However, the Delhi Police counsel countered the allegations saying it was a notification from the Maharashtra Government which said Salem’s life was under threat outside the State that was causing the delay. In the past, the court has issued several production warrants against Salem and also questioned the Arthur Road Jail authorities on why they have not been able to produce Salem despite production warrants being repeatedly issued against him. Salem is facing trial in a case of extortion in which a South Delhi-based businessman was threatened with dire consequences if he did not pay up Rs.5 crore in 2002. The Special Cell of the Delhi Police had arrested three persons, who were allegedly acting at Salem’s behest.
