2 workers run over by tipper at project site

ANANTAPUR: Two youth working for Handri-Neeva project were run over by a tipper accidentally near Subbarayunipalli village of Nallacheruvu mandal in the district in the wee hours of Friday. They died on the spot.

According to the information reaching here Sreeramulu Naik (22), who appeared for degree final year exams recently and Bapu Naik (17), who appeared for Intermediate second year exams recently, both belonging to Neralavanka thanda in Nallamada mandal were working as masons in the Handri-Neeva project canal excavation work.

After their work shift they went to sleep on the heap of soil on a bank of the canal around 4 a.m. A tipper loaded with excavated soil moved in the reverse direction accidentally and ran over the two sleeping on the heap. The soil loaded in the tipper had to be unloaded at a further point of the canal.

Nallamada legislator K. Mohan Reddy and Nallacheruvu SI Shafiullah visited the accident site.

Compensation sought

When the bodies were moved to the Government Area Hospital at Kadiri activists of the BJP, CPI and the CPI (M) staged a ‘rasta roko’ in front of the hospital against conducting the post mortem on the bodies till an assurance was given to the victim families that they would be paid a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh each.

Later, the legislator went to them and assured that Rs. 5 lakh each would be given from the government, Rs. 2 lakh each from the contractor concerned and Rs. 2.5 lakh each from the vehicle insurance.
