NIT-Tiruchi will fill OBC quota this year

Staff Reporter

Intake now stands at 530 for B.Tech programmes

Adequate number of teachers appointed last year

TIRUCHI: The National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi will fill the 27 per cent quota for Other Backward Classes in two phases.

In the coming year, the intake, which now stands at 530 for B.Tech programmes, will be increased by 27 per cent. And the same addition will be made in the subsequent year, too. As there is no space constraint, conforming to the quota norm will be easy, says Director M. Chidambaram.

Quota in PG courses too

The NIT-T is among the few institutions of its kind that are well off in hostel accommodation and faculty strength. The quota norm will be followed for postgraduate and other higher-level programmes too, Dr. Chidambaram said.

Most of the other NITs are said to have sought a grace of three years for expanding their capacity. The Union Human Resource Ministry has given the NITs four years for complying with the quota norm.

Providing for an increase in the intake in future, the NIT-T appointed adequate number of teachers last year to meet the teacher-student ratio of 1:14 and built a complex of classrooms with a higher accommodation capacity. Admitting more students in the coming year will only minimally alter the teacher-student ratio, he said.

The institute would go in for one more recruitment drive to appoint enough number of teachers before admitting the same number of students in the subsequent year. Simultaneously, it would also expand its hostels, laboratories and classrooms.
