Pleasing: Floodwater reaching Ramanathapuram big tank.

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Ramanathapuram big tank would be rehabilitated at a cost of Rs.8 crore with assistance from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), said R. Kirlosh Kumar, Collector.

Speaking at the agriculturalists’ grievance meeting held here on Friday, he said besides desilting the tank, work such as strengthening the bund, replacing damaged shutters and others would be carried out. This was the long-pending demand of the farmers. It would be very useful for ayacuts coming under the big tank. It would pave the way for storing water at full level.

He said the Sakkarakottai kanmoi was desilted last year. Damages caused to tanks such as Pondikanmoi, Keelambalkanmoi, Keelakottaikanmoi, T. Karunkulam and others due to the recent heavy rain were repaired and brought to the normal level.

Mr. Kumar said a proposal had been sent to the Government to provide necessary funds to repair the damaged tanks affected by rain. One more proposal was sent to the Government for constructing a check dam at Averendhal.

Distribution of compensation to farmers in Paramakudi, Kamudhi and Kadaladi blocks, whose standing crops were affected due to heavy rain, had been started. Compensation to farmers in Ramanathapuram, Mudukulathur and Thiruvadanai blocks would be given as soon as the funds were received from the Government.

The Collector said the district had received 414.8 mm of rain so far as against 149.8 mm of rainfall since January. The water level had increased in almost all tanks in the district due to rain. Out of 1694 kanmois, 339 kanmois had water for supply for two months.

Water level in 1355 kanmois was sufficient enough for supply for a month. As there was no need to supply water for cultivation, since there was hardly any cultivation, the storage level was likely to go down only marginally.

Mr. Kumar said the farmers should come forward to utilise the benefit of various schemes such as National Food Security Scheme, National Horticulture Mission Scheme and others.
