dated April 26, 1958: Naval aviation

Vice-Admiral Sir Stephen Carlill, the outgoing Chief of the Naval Staff, addressing a press conference in Bombay on April 24, before sailing for the U.K., said that the Indian naval officers and ratings were a splendid body of men, and “I had the privilege to command them for nearly three years.” He said what the navy had accomplished during his term of office was due to good planning and work of his predecessors and also officers and men working as one united team. Admiral Carlill emphasised the importance of developing naval aviation, and said that in modern warfare one could not fight without air power. The aim was to defend India’s trade routes and guard her 3,000 miles of coastline.
