Letters to the Editor
Sarabjit Singh’s much-awaited family reunion — after 18 long years — at the Kot Lakhpat jail, Lahore, on Thursday became more of an international event. The poor man is being tossed about like a ball. What Sarabjit needs is support from his country to see that no injustice is done to him, not a celebrity status. We seem to have taken for granted that he is indeed guilty of the crimes he is alleged to have committed in Pakistan. His statement that his was a case of mistaken identity is not being given due importance. What is more relevant is his disclosure that he and a few others confessed to treason in the hope of gaining an early release. Pachu Menon, Margao I am happy to learn that the Indian government’s request to Pakistan to spare Sarabjit’s life is under active consideration. I hope Islamabad will release him on humanitarian grounds, taking into consideration the fact that he has been in prison for 18 years.A. Jainulabdeen, Chennai The Pakistan government’s gesture of allowing Sarabjit’s family to meet him is indeed noble. It is heartening to note that cutting across political and religious ideologies, several leaders, including the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, have made fervent appeals to the Pakistan government to spare Sarabjit’s life.R. Murali Kumar, Srirangam
