POWERING ON: BHEL Executive Director M. Namasivayam, right, releasing the first copy of seminar proceedings to NIT-T Director M. Chidambaram at a function in Tiruchi on Friday. From left, BHEL Executive Director, Tiruchi, R.N. Misra, and Director B. Prasada Rao. TIRUCHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited was well on course to attain 15,000 mw capacity by 2009, B. Prasada Rao, Director – Industrial Systems and Products, BHEL, said on Friday. Inaugurating a two-day workshop on ‘Tubes and Pipes – Production and Processing’ organised by the Indian Institute of Metals, Tiruchi Chapter, at the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, Mr. Prasada Rao noted the constraints were in the forms of inadequacy of critical components such as tubes and pipes of high quality, castings and forgings, and shortage of skilled welders. Super critical technology improved cycle efficiency, but the availability of materials mattered. Alongside, there was also a need to keep the cost under control and address environmental commitments, he said. The Integrated Energy Policy document envisaged attainment of a capacity of 8 lakh mw by 2032. An addition of one lakh mw is expected to be made during the 12th Five-Year Plan, he informed, noting that power production must be increased substantially to fuel the economic growth at 9 to 10 per cent over the next three decades. Mr. Rao endorsed the view expressed earlier by Executive Director of BHEL Tiruchi R.N. Misra that the steep rise in the cost of steel should be offset by improvement of productivity of processes. Mr. Misra said that the topic of the workshop was of high relevance. He was in favour of simultaneous upgradation of technology by vendors, referring to the new technologies introduced by the Welding Research Institute to improve productivity. Director of NIT-T M. Chidambaram thanked industries for supporting the institution. “The exposure that students gain in the industries stands them in good stead to launch their careers in manufacturing concerns with a high level of confidence,” he said. Dr. Chidambaram observed that the revival of the interest of engineering students towards manufacturing sector was a good augury. Dr. Chidambaram received the first copy of the workshop proceedings that was released by M. Namasivayam, Executive Director, Cethar Vessels Private Limited, Tiruchi. S. Karunakaran, Vice-Chairman, Indian Institute of Metals, Tiruchi, presented an overview of the workshop. G. Umashankar, Chairman, Indian Institute of Metals, Tiruchi, and N. Parameswaran, honorary secretary, offered felicitations.
