Students protest against OBC quota

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: A group of students from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University, IIT-Delhi and government- run medical colleges on Friday demonstrated on the lawns of Supreme Court to protest against implementation of 27 per cent OBC quota in post-graduate programmes in Central higher educational institutions.

The police were caught unawares when more than 100 students in small groups assembled on the lawns around 11 a.m. Carrying placards, they shouted slogans against the Centre and the quota system.

The police chased the students out of the court premises, rounded them up and took them to the Tilag Marg police station.

Within few minutes another group gathered outside the Supreme Court entrance and shouted slogans and they dispersed after police intervention. Those rounded up were released.

Youth for Equality, which has spearheaded the demonstration, said in a press release that the government should prepare a fresh list of OBC beneficiaries (after removing the creamy layer) in accordance with the April 10 judgment.
