MADURAI: Agents of the public sector insurance major Life Insurance Corporation of India staged a demonstration in front of the Divisional Office here on Friday.

It was part of a nation-wide agitation calling on all parties to support a private member’s Bill tabled on Friday that would provide succour to LIC agents.

Association’s South Zone secretary M. Selvaraj said that the Bill tabled in Parliament by national president of the organisation and Communist Party of India (Marxist) Member of Parliament Basudev Acharya would provide much-needed relief to LIC agents, whose contributions were not being recognised.

Mr. Selvaraj said that LIC agents did not have any social security despite being the driving force behind the phenomenal growth of the public sector insurance major.

The Bill envisaged extension of several benefits such as pension, scholarship for children, maternity benefits for women workers, compensation under various grounds to agents, he said.

It also provided for creation of a welfare board for agents.

He called upon the public to support the Bill. The association’s sister unions, National Federation of Insurance Field Workers of India and All India Insurance Employees Association, had extended support to the agitation, a note from the association said.
