VIJAYAWADA: Exuding confidence that the Congress would win a “majority of the seats” going to by-elections in Telangana region, Minister for Energy, Coal and Minority Welfare Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Friday said that the developmental works initiated by the Rajasekhara Reddy Government would ensure a smooth sailing for the Congress. Finding fault with the TRS leadership for deciding to field its candidate from the Khairatabad Assembly constituency, which had fallen vacant following the sudden demise of Congress MLA P. Janardhan Reddy, Mr. Ali Shabbir said it was a clear proof of the “political immaturity” of the TRS. “This is the problem with minor political parties, which can’t take a stable decision. The party had earlier announced that it would not field its candidates from Khairatabad but it took no time to change its mind,” he said, addressing a press conference here. Mr. Ali Shabbir said 51 per cent of the beneficiaries of free power to the farm sector were from Telangana region and the prestigious ‘Jalayagnam’ programme had also begun to deliver the results. “These are all indications of a comfortable majority to the Congress in the by-elections,” he remarked. CPI(M) dharnaActivists of the CPI(M) staged a dharna outside the State Guest House where Mr. Ali Shabbir was talking to the media, demanding that he take steps to distribute Wakf lands at Nidamanuru to the poor people among Muslims. They later submitted a memorandum to Mr. Ali Shabbir. The Minister earlier laid foundation stone for a 33/11 kv electrical sub-station at Valluripalem village in Thotlavalluru mandal, which would be constructed at a cost of Rs.82.77 lakhs, and inaugurated a primary health centre constructed at a cost of Rs. 35 lakhs.
