Income limit for white cards to be enhanced
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The Government has taken a decision in principle to enhance the upper income limit of families for the purpose of issuing white ration cards, in view of the general improvement in income levels following the hike in wages.
Sources indicated that the annual income limit would be pegged at Rs. 60,000 for a family. At present, this limit is Rs. 20,000 for a family in rural areas and Rs. 24,000 in urban areas.
Civil Supplies Minister Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy told reporters after a meeting with Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Friday that the Government would make a formal announcement on the income limit only after the byelections as a code of conduct is in force.
There has been a gradual increase in the income limit. More families, particularly those in the middle-income bracket, will now become eligible for the white cards under which rice, kerosene, sugar and wheat are available at a subsidy.
