Supreme Court denies students permission to take B. Ed exam

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant permission to 5,000 students admitted to 61 teacher training institutions in Tamil Nadu during 2007-2008 after the cut-off date fixed by the government to appear for their examinations.

The State issued a G.O. on May 17, 2007 fixing July to June as the academic year for B.Ed, giving a time schedule for completion of admission process. The students concerned were admitted after the cut-off date fixed in the G.O.

A Bench of Justices B.N. Agrawal and G.S. Singhvi in a brief order said “prayer to grant interim relief is rejected so far as [students admitted in] the academic year 2007-2008 is concerned.”

The special leave petitions were filed by the All India Private Educational Institutions Association, by its president, B.T. Kumar; Self Financing Teacher Training Institutes and B.Ed Colleges Association and three others against an order of the Madras High Court dated April 1 declining to grant relief. They sought an interim direction to permit students admitted during 2006-2007 in the petitioner-institutions who had not taken their first year examination to appear for the exam; direct the authorities to publish results of students admitted during 2006-2007 and to permit students admitted during 2007-2008 to appear for the examination.
