Remark by Congress member brings matters to a boil
|
CHENNAI: The Assembly on Friday witnessed uproarious scenes as members belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Congress almost came to blows over a remark made by Kovai Thangam (Congress).
Speaking on the demand for grants for the Labour Department, Kovai Thangam wanted to know whether the AIADMK, which had decided to observe fast demanding minimum wages for tea estate workers in Valparai, would organise a similar fast in Kodanadu Estate.
The AIADMK members were immediately on their feet, protesting against the remark. For the next few minutes, there were shouts and counter shouts between the Congress and the AIADMK members. At one stage Pollachi Jayaraman and P.K. Sekar Babu, both belonging to the AIADMK, menacingly moved towards Kovai Thangam but were stopped by other members. Attempts by Congress Legislature Party leader D.Sudarsanam and whip S.Peter Alphonse to defuse the situation also failed.
AIADMK whip K.A. Sengottaiyan said Mr. Thangam had deliberately used the word ‘Kodanadu’ and demanded that it be expunged. But the Speaker said it was not an unparliamentary word.
