KOLKATA: After Maharashtra, West Bengal is now questioning the presence of cheerleaders at Indian Premier League cricket matches. So far the city’s Eden Gardens has hosted one IPL match. The next is due on April 29. Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty said here on Friday that he did not like their presence on the field and would take up the matter with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The concept of cheerleaders reflected “a westernised culture that is spreading in the name of the so-called globalisation which has its own economic spin-offs and where earning money is the only compulsion,” said Mr. Chakraborty, who is a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). “What is the need for having cheerleaders? Why is it so important?” Public Works Department Minister and senior leader of the Revolutionary Socialist Party Kshiti Goswami also said he did not “agree with the culture” that allowed such performances.
