CITU strike successful

NEW DELHI: The two-day strike called by the Delhi State Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions ended in Delhi and neighbouring towns on Friday with the organisation claiming that it evoked an “unprecedented response”.
The strike saw the participation of a large number of organised and unorganised sector workers who demanded implementation of labour laws, Rs.8,500 minimum wage, health insurance, pension and provident fund for unorganised sector workers. After the strike, the CITU warned the Centre and the State governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh that if they did not accept the demands of the industrial and unorganised workers within six months the working class in these areas would organise a bigger action. According to CITU’s Delhi State Committee general secretary Mohan Lal, the strike was total in the industrial areas of North Delhi, Wazirpur, G.T. Karnal Road, Badli and Narela. A large number of workers took out a procession in Wazirpur, North-West Delhi and Mangolpuri Phase I and II.
Besides organised workers, hawkers, rickshaw pullers and shop employees also participated in the strike.
