Minister withdraws resignation threat

YSR hammers out understanding between Diwakar Reddy and ‘rival group’ leader

HYDERABAD: Panchayat Raj Minister J. C. Diwakar Reddy withdrew his threat to resign from the Cabinet over the issue of alleged one-upmanship by a rival Congress group in Dharmavaram constituency in Anantapur district after he had a fruitful meeting with Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday night.

The Chief Minister hammered out an understanding between Mr. Diwakar Reddy and leader of the other group, K. Venkatarami Reddy, son of late MLA K. Suryapratapa Reddy, by advising him not to interfere in party affairs in each other’s constituencies – Tadipatri and Dharmavaram respectively. He permitted the Minister to go ahead with the scheduled inauguration of the new building of Dhamavaram Muncipal Council, a bone of contention between the two groups, on Sunday.

Sources quoted Dr. Reddy as having advised the Panchayat Raj Minister that as a senior party leader he should take all groups in the Congress with him. Differences, if any, could be brought to the notice of the district-in-charge Minister Botcha Satyanarayana.

Earlier, the rivalry between the groups spilled over to State capital with both meeting the Chief Minister to convey their grievances.

Ten councillors owing allegiance to Mr. Venkatarami Reddy had resigned on April 23 against the attitude of the Minister as well as his close follower, K. Harinath, who is the Municipal Chairman. They accused the latter of not taking them into confidence at the Minister’s instance.

They complained to the Chief Minister that Mr. Diwakar Reddy had violated the agreement reached in his presence last year not to interfere in the affairs of Dharmavaram constituency. Interestingly, these councillors belong not only to the Congress but to the TDP, BJP and the CPI (M) as well.

Isolated

Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy and Mr. Botcha Satyanarayana were also present at Dr. Reddy’s meeting with Mr. Diwakar Reddy.

They were said to have reported to the Chief Minister earlier in the day that Mr. Diwakar Reddy was almost isolated on the issue and said he was at fault.
