CHENNAI: Residents of Athma Nagar and Jothiammal Nagar slums in Saidapet on Friday were educated about the measures to be adopted during fire accidents by the Fire and Rescue Services.

As part of the drive, the firemen and officers conducted a mock drill and detailed various causes of fire accidents in the slums. The audience comprising children and women were briefed about ways to douse fire.

For instance, when the fire accident is caused by oil, it is advisable to douse it with wet blanket and not water, the fire personnel said. The residents were also taught how to rescue a person trapped in a fire. One has to drop to the floor and roll; not run as it would intensify the fire, the officials said. Demonstrations about how the personnel get into action once they receive a call and the rescue operations were also conducted. S. Saraswathy, a resident of Jothiammal Nagar, said that she learnt that small mistakes, be it keeping inflammable things next to the stove or not caring to turn off the chimney lamp, could cause a big loss. Fire and Rescue Services director K.R. Shyamsundar said that 129 fire accidents were reported in 2007 as against 176 in 2006. However, there were five deaths during fire accidents last year.
