Steps to promote education in rural areas demanded

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: Members belonging to different political parties, who participated in the discussions on five demands including education, fisheries and transport on Friday, stressed the need for urgent measures to promote education in the rural areas, besides alleviating the problems of fishermen.

R. Rajaraman (DMK) urged the government to set up colleges in the rural areas. The move would end the travails of the students in villages, besides reducing traffic congestion in Puducherry town, he said. The library movement in the villages had not made a big headway, he pointed out. He highlighted the importance of raising trees as natural barriers in the coastal areas.

Mushrooming private layouts in villages had affected the drainage system, he said, adding that failure to desilt the tanks had also led to inundation of several areas during floods.

N.Kalainathan (CPI) said the School Education Department should have an exclusive director. The government should immediately appoint principals for five of the seven government colleges, he added. The government should earmark funds to start night schools for children in over 400 villages in the Union Territory. Educated unemployed youth and B.Ed. graduates could be posted as teachers of these schools on a honorarium of Rs.2,000 a month.

He demanded separate identity cards for fish workers and others in the community with a view to ensuring that the government’s assistance reached the genuine beneficiaries. There were 90 teachers’ associations in the Union Territory, he said, asking the Education Department to take necessary steps to scale down the number of these outfits.

N. Anandu (PMC) said IT parks should be established in the rural areas also. He urged the government to expedite the construction of houses for all the fishermen in the tsunami-hit areas as part of the rehabilitation.
